Tutorial for ScreenTag
ScreenTag is a menu bar app for macOS that captures screenshots and screencasts, then lets you annotate still images and export them in the format and location you choose.
Where everything lives
• ScreenTag does not use a Dock icon. Look for the record-circle icon in the menu bar (top right of the screen).
• All capture actions start from that icon or its menu.
• Settings open from the menu bar menu ("Settings…") or from System Settings if you added ScreenTag there via the standard macOS Settings scene.
First launch and permissions
• The first time you run ScreenTag, a welcome window explains permissions.
• Screen Recording is required to capture the display. Grant it when prompted, or open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen Recording and enable ScreenTag.
• Microphone access is needed if you want voice in screencasts. Grant it under Privacy & Security › Microphone, or from the welcome screen.
• After changing permissions, you may need to quit and reopen the app if capture still fails.
Starting a capture
• Click the menu bar icon and choose "Take Screenshot" or "Record Screencast."
• Optional shortcuts (with Command held): digit 5 starts screenshot mode, digit 6 starts screencast mode (same as choosing those commands from the menu).
A dark overlay appears over your displays with a floating toolbar.
The capture toolbar
Mode (segmented control):
• Screenshot — captures a still image when you press Capture.
• Screencast — records video when you press Record.
Capture area (menu):
• Free Selection — drag handles to resize the rectangle; move the whole region as needed.
• Full Screen — captures the entire screen; the toolbar may be hidden, so use the menu bar icon menu for Capture, Record, or Cancel.
• Front Window — captures the frontmost app window when possible.
Primary actions:
• Capture — take the screenshot (screenshot mode).
• Record — start recording (screencast mode).
• While recording: Pause / Resume, Stop (red), and a running time display.
• Cancel — leaves capture mode without saving (or stops recording, depending on context).
If Screen Recording is denied, the toolbar shows a permission warning; use "Open Settings" in alerts to jump to System Settings.
After a screenshot: annotation
• Still captures open in an "Annotate Screenshot" window with your image.
• Tools (segmented strip): Selection, Freehand, Rectangle, Ellipse, Line, Arrow, Text, Eraser.
• Use Selection to move or resize existing shapes; use Undo / Redo (Edit menu or shortcuts) as usual.
• Text: place a region, then enter text in the popover.
• Stroke and fill colors and line width are available depending on the tool.
• Save or Copy — saves to your chosen destination (see Settings) or copies to the clipboard, based on your export preferences.
• Cancel — closes without applying your edits (behavior follows app logic for discarding).
Screencasts
• Choose Screencast, set the area, then Record.
• Use Pause if you need a break; Stop ends recording and saves the video according to your video format and destination in Settings.
• Recording options (microphone, system audio, frame rate) are configured in Settings under the Recording and Export tabs.
Settings overview
Open "Settings…" from the menu bar menu. Tabs include:
General:
• Start at login.
• Default mode (Screenshot or Screencast).
• Whether to include the mouse cursor in captures.
Recording:
• Video frame rate (e.g. 30 or 60 fps).
• Capture microphone and/or system audio for screencasts.
Export:
• Image format, size (including custom width/height), JPEG quality, border style.
• Video file format.
• Where to save images and videos (Pictures, Movies, Clipboard for images where supported, Desktop, or a custom folder you pick).
About and updates
• "About…" in the menu shows version information and links to elonovo.com, FAQs, and support.
• For builds distributed outside the Mac App Store, "Check for Updates…" may be available from the About window.
Tips
• If the capture rectangle cannot span multiple displays, resize it to fit on one screen.
• Keep the menu bar icon visible so you can reach controls when the overlay is full screen.
• For the best experience, grant both Screen Recording and Microphone before long recording sessions.
